Feb. 17: Please join me for the 2012 State of the County Address

I invite you to join me on Feb. 17, 2012 as I deliver my annual State of the County address at the City Club of Portland. I will discuss the challenges, triumphs and goals of Multnomah County and outline how we're leveraging creative solutions and solid partnerships to address the needs of our community.

Learn about health system transformation on new county page

Health system transformation is the vision of Governor John Kitzhaber and the Oregon Legislature and will transform the health system for community members served by the Oregon Health Plan. Transformation efforts are moving quickly in Oregon and will impact Multnomah County, the largest safety net provider in Oregon for primary care and dental care. The county is also the public health authority and mental health authority leading many prevention efforts and operating the crisis system of care. All community members have a stake in this dynamic transformation.

Board unanimously approves resolution to put Multnomah County Library funding on ballot

The Multnomah County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Thursday that will ask voters to renew the current library tax levy in May. The decision at the Thursday, Jan. 5 meeting is part of the two-step plan to create permanent, stable funding for the Multnomah County Library system. Contingent on county voters approving the levy in May, the county then will place a library tax district measure later this year on the November ballot.

Library Funding Proposal

On January 5th, I will ask the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners to refer a 3-year extension of the current 89 cent library property tax levy to the May ballot and to place the question of a permanent library district before voters in 2014. While I strongly support a district, I believe this approach gives us the best opportunity to avoid devastating cuts to our libraries if a May ballot issue were to fail. We reached this conclusion after learning in November that a ballot rejection could cost up to 300 jobs and lead to the closure of most branches.
