Personal Background
Marissa has lived in some of biggest cities in the world (Los Angeles and Mexico City) and some of the smallest (Ridgefield, Washington, Home of the Spudders!). She is a graduate of the University of Washington, majoring in zoology. Before entering politics, she worked as a marketing director, recruiter and even started her own quarterly magazine covering the local music scene (Bonus points for anyone who knows the name or produces a copy).
Since then, Marissa has spent most of her career focused on local political issues including a successful campaign to create the Greater Clark County Parks District in unincorporated Clark County.
She first started working for Chair Cogen as his campaign manager in his successful bid for District 2 Commissioner in 2006. She continued on as his chief of staff, moving with him to the Chair’s office.
Work Responsibilities
Marissa is responsible for the day-to-day operations and supervision of the Chair’s office and staff. Marissa's innovation led to ‘County C.R.O.P.S.’—an effort to enlist volunteers and private contributions to help farm surplus county-owned land near Troutdale and donate 100% of the harvest to local food pantries. In its first year, the program raised over $25,000 and donated over 10,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce for hundreds of low-income Multnomah County residents.
Hobbies and Interests
Marissa is an avid writer, an accomplished cook and still enjoys studying science for old-times sake. She especially loves spending precious free time with her artist husband and their two children.
