DCJ Hosts Regional Training on Victim Services

The nation’s leading experts on victim-services traveled to Portland, Oregon to deliver a two-day training (May 7-8th) hosted by the Multnomah County Department of Community Justice (DCJ). Over 48 community corrections professionals attended the training with participants coming from Multnomah, Marion, Yamhill, Washington and Columbia counties.
DCJ Director Appointed to Governor’s Public Safety Commission

Scott Taylor, director of Multnomah County’s Department of Community Justice, has been appointed to Oregon’s Public Safety Commission. The Commission was initially established last fall and was recently expanded in an executive order signed by Governor Kitzhaber. Fighting Fillies Honor Public Safety Members

Local women’s football team, the Fighting Fillies, dedicated their most recent match against the Valley Vipers to members of the public safety community. The Fillies play full contact football in a national league of more than 50 teams. Declaring May 12th as Public Safety Day, the Fillies offered half-price admission to badge carrying members of parole/probation, police, fire, ambulance/EMT, and the sheriff’s office. During halftime, members of the public safety community were asked to stand and be publicly applauded for their efforts.

Shireman Memorial Lecture Explores New Directions for Youth

On Wednesday, March 21, 2012, over 100 people gathered at the Portland State University School of Social Work for the Charles Shireman Memorial Lecture. Shay Bilchik, Director of the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University, delivered this year’s speech entitled, “If We Knew Then What We Know Now: Implications for Juvenile Justice Policy in America”.
DCJ Plungers Help Special Olympics

On the morning of Saturday, Feb. 11th a team of Multnomah County employees from the Department of Community Justice (DCJ) plunged into the Columbia River at Broughton Beach for the annual Polar Plunge. The event benefits Special Olympics Oregon and is supported by Oregon Law Enforcement.
This is an growing tradition for DCJ whose team size has tripled in recent years. This year, DCJ had 13 employees volunteer and together they raised $2,391 – vastly exceeding their original goal of $500.
Multnomah County juvenile justice reform gets praise

Multnomah County’s reform of its juvenile justice system has accomplished so much over the past 20 years that it’s become a national model, the Board of Commissioners learned during a briefing on Feb. 9.
Family Services Unit Shares Holiday "magic" for Families

On December 20th, 2011 the Family Services Unit held its Annual Winter Holiday Party for clients. Every year, this event allows parents who might otherwise be unable to afford gifts to pick out new gifts for their children. Wrapping paper, ribbons and tape was provided so parents could not only pick out the gifts, but also wrap the gifts and label them for their children.
DCJ Sponsors Community Forum at Jefferson High School

Concerned about growing gang violence in the Jefferson/Roosevelt neighborhoods, nearly 100 community members and public safety professionals gathered in the cafeteria of Jefferson High School on December 1, 2011. Community members were urged to take action and offered opportunities to get more involved in activities such as foot patrols, prayer groups, mentoring programs and sports activities for youth.
First Black Sorority Honors Multnomah County Juvenile Court Counselor

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority held its 24th Annual Emerald Awards honoring nine men for their leadership and achievements. Leslie Taylor, Juvenile Court Counselor, Department of Community Justice, was one of the chosen honorees in recognition of his dedication to improving youth services.
