Dear Friends,
As the debate about guns continues around the Country, I wanted to update you on progress right here in Multnomah County. Last Thursday, the Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance to help reduce gun violence in our community. The ordinance includes new regulations on the possession and discharge of a weapon, guns and children, and it requires that stolen or lost firearms be reported immediately. Last month I had the opportunity to tour Jackson Middle School's SUN site. SUN stands for Schools Uniting Neighborhoods, and the engagement from the Jackson community is a great example of how the SUN system works.

I am pleased to share that today, April 25th, the Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a gun safety ordinance that I proposed with the support of Chair Jeff Cogen, District Attorney Rod Underhill and Sheriff Dan Staton.

Multnomah County's Board of Commissioners on Thursday, April 25 unanimously approved an ordinance designed to keep guns away from children and put some limits on where loaded guns can be carried or discharged.

For the past few months, I’ve been working with our County Attorney and Chair Jeff Cogen on an ordinance addressing gun safety in Multnomah County. The proposed ordinance will come before the Board next Thursday, April 18 th at 9:30am.
County launches interactive site to celebrate Broadway Bridge Centennial

In honor of the Broadway Bridge's upcoming 100th birthday on Monday, April 22, Multnomah County recently launched a website called HappyBirthdayBroadwayBridge.com.
Visitors to the website can learn about the Broadway Bridge’s history; get details about the celebration on Sunday, April 21 being hosted by the PDX Bridge Festival; and post fond memories and birthday well-wishes about the Broadway Bridge right on the homepage of the site.

Dear Friends,
As the mother of a first grader, the devastating shootings in Newton, CT continue to haunt me. The thought of someone walking into my daughter's classroom and opening fire is incomprehensible. I've received emails from many of you asking what I will do to prevent gun violence in our community.
Oregon’s First Lady declares new war on poverty, child hunger

First Lady Cylvia Hayes declared a new war on poverty Tuesday, announcing details of a prosperity plan to tackle the state’s alarming rate of hunger.
Oregon has one of the highest rates of child hunger in the nation. In response, Hayes said, Gov. John Kitzhaber is rolling out a multi-pronged plan in April.
Sellwood Bridge completes huge milestone: Multnomah County re-opens span ahead of schedule

The temporary Sellwood Bridge is now open for traffic after a 6-day closure allowed workers to move a large portion of the span to make way for construction on the replacement bridge.

Dear Friends,
The upcoming Sellwood Bridge closure is a necessary step in the effort to replace the aging bridge. Thankfully, the bridge will only be closed for a short time (Jan. 17-24) but it will be a bit quieter for businesses in Sellwood and Westmoreland. Sellwood neighbor Heather Koch offers this great advice on how to support our local businesses through the bridge closure:
