Board of Commissioners moves to help homeless families in crisis

shelter/contingency_nick fish With record numbers of children and families being turned away from overwhelmed shelters, the Board of County Commissioners unanimously agreed on Thursday, Dec. 22 to expand safe places to sleep.


Celebrate Collaboration at Franklin High School

Franklin High School, School-Based Health Clinic   Multnomah County and Portland Public Schools will celebrate a new collaboration at Franklin High School on Monday, Dec. 12 at 1:30 p.m. Chair Jeff Cogen, Commissioner Judy Shiprack, Health Department Director Lillian Shirley and Portland Superintendent Carole Smith will honor the community coming together on behalf of kids.


Board of Commissioners issues proclamation recognizing World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day red ribbon On Thursday, Dec. 1, the Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation declaring World AIDS Day countywide. Sponsored by Commissioner Judy Shiprack, the proclamation is part of the annual worldwide AIDS Day campaign that this year has the theme, “30 Years of AIDS, TIME for ACTION.”


National Spotlight on Multnomah County Juvenile Detention Initiative

Juvenile Detention Reform NACO report cover graphic In 1994, Multnomah County adapted the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) Model. Multnomah County’s juvenile justice system decreased the juvenile arrest rate by 53 percent between 1994 and 2007. Reforms are also credited with saving Multnomah County taxpayers about $7.5 million dollars in the past decade.


Community Open House Tour of the Wikman Building

The Wikman Building   Multnomah County and District 3 Commissioner Judy Shiprack will host an open House as part of a public process to solicit potential new uses for the Wikman Building, a Southeast Portland landmark that has been declared surplus by the county.
