East County Courthouse Grand Opening April 10th

The long-awaited and much-needed East County Courthouse celebrates its grand opening on April 10th.The celebration will be at 10am on Tuesday, April 10th, at the site of the new facility on Southeast 185th and Stark Street in Gresham. Speakers during the ceremony will include Commissioner McKeel, Chair Jeff Cogen, Commissioner Judy Shiprack, Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul De Muniz, Multnomah County Presiding Judge Nan Waller, and Multnomah County District Attorney Michael Schrunk. Self-guided tours will be available after the ceremony until noon.

1) Forum on health care system transformation. What happened? What will happen next?
On Thursday, March 15, the Multnomah County Citizen Involvement Committee (CIC) and County Chair Jeff Cogen will sponsor an educational forum about changes in the health care system due to new state and federal laws. The forum is intended to be informational, with officials from the state of Oregon and Multnomah County presenting on a variety of topics related to health care system transformation.

Board of Commissioners moves to help homeless families in crisis

With record numbers of children and families being turned away from overwhelmed shelters, the Board of County Commissioners unanimously agreed on Thursday, Dec. 22 to expand safe places to sleep.
Celebrate Collaboration at Franklin High School

Multnomah County and Portland Public Schools will celebrate a new collaboration at Franklin High School on Monday, Dec. 12 at 1:30 p.m. Chair Jeff Cogen, Commissioner Judy Shiprack, Health Department Director Lillian Shirley and Portland Superintendent Carole Smith will honor the community coming together on behalf of kids.
Board of Commissioners issues proclamation recognizing World AIDS Day

On Thursday, Dec. 1, the Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation declaring World AIDS Day countywide.
Sponsored by Commissioner Judy Shiprack, the proclamation is part of the annual worldwide AIDS Day campaign that this year has the theme, “30 Years of AIDS, TIME for ACTION.”
Multnomah County Board Briefing on Library Funding

Multnomah County Library is in the 5th year of its five year levy. The levy will expire in June 2012, so the May 2012 ballot is the final opportunity to secure library funding before the current levy expires. With the passage of Measure 26-114 in November 2010, the Board of County Commissioners has a choice to make between referring a library district measure and renewing the library levy.
National Spotlight on Multnomah County Juvenile Detention Initiative

In 1994, Multnomah County adapted the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) Model.
Multnomah County’s juvenile justice system decreased the juvenile arrest rate by 53 percent between 1994 and 2007. Reforms are also credited with saving Multnomah County taxpayers about $7.5 million dollars in the past decade.
