Where can I get an HIV Test?

When asked, HIV testing is available at most private providers as part of regular medical care, family planning or STD exams. Multnomah County Health Department and other agencies in our region area also offer HIV testing.

What is HIV, how is it spread, and what are the symptoms?

HIV infection is a disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The condition gradually destroys the immune system, which makes it harder for the body to fight infections.HIV transmission can occur when blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, vaginal fluid, or breast milk from an infected person enters the body of an uninfected person. The only way to know whether you are infected is to be tested for HIV. For more information on HIV, please visit the CDC HIV website.

What is the relationship between HIV and other STDs?

HIV is one of many different sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Having one can increase your risk of getting another one. For more information on other STDs and how to prevent them, visit the American Sexual Health Association.

What are the different tests for HIV?
