BMI – What is it and why is it important?
Health plan benefits are a valuable part of any employee’s benefit package. Employers provide the coverage and sometimes, as users, we may be a little complacent about what each one of us do to help protect those benefits. There are many pieces of the health puzzle that an individual cannot control, but we all may need to more carefully consider those pieces of the puzzle that are within our control.
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. There are fancy machines to measure BMI but there are also some fairly simple measurements and calculations anyone can do to get an idea of their own BMI. While BMI may not accurately reflect body fatness in people who are very short (under 5 feet) and in older people, who tend to lose muscle mass as they age, for most people BMI is a reliable way to tell if your weight is
putting your health at risk.
BMI measures your weight in relation to your height, and it is closely associated with measures of body fat. Visit the April issue of the Benefits and Wellness Newsletter for more information.
