What is Redistricting?
Redistricting is the process of redrawing electoral district lines following the decennial U.S. Census.  The Oregon Legislature is responsible for redistricting the state’s 60 House districts and 30 Senate districts, as well as the five U.S. Congressional districts.

Local government or special government districts that elect by zone or sub-district must redraw their electoral district lines. Other districts that have a candidate residency qualification within a zone or sub-district must redraw their district lines. Those cities and special districts without electoral districts do not redistrict.

The lines are redrawn so that districts are of roughly equal population as required by the Oregon Constitution, the U.S. Constitution, Oregon Statute, Adminstrative Rule or Charter/Code redistricting requirements.

2011 and 2012 are transitional years for redistricting of electorial district boundaries. Boundaries that affect voters in Multnomah County include US Congress, State Senate, State House, Metro Council, Multnomah County Commissioners, PCC board, MHCC board, ESD boards, Rockwood and Interlachen PUD boards. As electoral district boundaries change, those maps will be updated on our website.

Candidates running in the May 2012 Primary Election will be filing under the new electoral district lines. Please see our Upcoming Elections section of this website for more information.

Multnomah County Elections will develop new precincts using all of the new electoral district lines and following ORS 246.410 and Administrative rule #2011-2. New precincts in Multnomah County will be completed by Jan. 31, 2012.
