The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners will consider a resolution on Oct. 7 to form a new Advisory Committee on Sustainability and Innovation (ACSI).  This new body will meet quarterly with and receive staff support from the Multnomah County Office of Sustainability.

The charge of the ACSI will be to provide advice and advocacy to Multnomah County on sustainability issues affecting the community, the environment and the economy.  Members of the ACSI will provide recommendations on implementing the 2009 Climate Action Plan, sustainable government operations, improving social equity, and promoting a healthy, prosperous and resilient community. The committee also will evaluate proposals for innovations in technology and business processes that may be applicable to county operations.

The ACSI will address concerns previously brought before the joint Portland/Multnomah County Sustainable Development Commission, which ended after the creation of the City of Portland’s Planning and Sustainability Commission.  Some former members of the previous city/county committee will continue their service through the ACSI, but several seats will be held open for new members.  Multnomah County encourages members of the public with expertise in areas of sustainability to apply to join the ACSI.

“Sustainability and innovation are guiding principles for the work we do at Multnomah County,” said Chair Jeff Cogen.  “Creating this new board gives us an opportunity to benefit from the diverse perspectives and passion in our community, and will help make Multnomah County a more effective organization and a better place to live.”

The ACSI will work with the Office of the Chair, the Office of Sustainability, and the Office of Citizen Involvement.  Members will provide reports to the County Chair and the Board of County Commissioners. ACSI meetings will be open to the public and will take place at the Multnomah Building, 501 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd., in Portland.

Applications are due Sept 24.  An online application can be found at www.multco.us/sustainability. For more information or to request an application, call Tim Lynch at 503-988-4094 or send an email to sustainability@co.multnomah.or.us.
