Results

In 2008-09, the 58 SUN Community Schools in operation served:

  • 14,733 children and youth in ongoing enrolled classes and activities
  • 3,091 adults in adult education, skill-building and school-related classes
  • 81,826 people in community and family events and activities.

Showing Results:

Regularly participating students showed strong gains in academics, attendance and behavioral areas:

  • 75% increased state benchmark scores in Reading
  • 77% increased state benchmark scores in Math
  • Average daily school attendance was 95%
  • Improving Youth Assets & Interim Academic Outcomes:
  • 68& improved in turning in homework on time
  • 80% improved in classroom academic performance
  • 74% had a more positive attitude toward school
  • 67% improved behavior
  • 76% improved class participation
  • 75% improved in finding alternative resolutions to problems
  • 93% of students have at least one adult who cares about them at to whom they can go for help

Bringing in Community and Business resources:

  • Over 52,000 volunteer hours contributed by 3,012 community and business volunteers
  • Over 350 business and community partners
